Abstract:

Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a progressive, debilitating, and sometimes crippling condition which has a tremendous burden on society and the workforce. Patients with RA may suffer from complications related to joint pathology as well as organ dysfunction, including decreased immune system function, increased cardiovascular risk, and pulmonary complications. In light of this evidence, it is important to consider appropriate and early treatment of this condition. There are many effective therapies presently available to treat RA, including analgesics, anti-inflammatory drugs, disease-modifying anti-rheumatic drugs, and anti-tumor necrosis factor (anti-TNF) drugs. Data suggests that early treatment with these newer agents may forestall the progression of the joint damage seen in patients with RA; however, there have been concerns regarding their long-term safety. This educational program will discuss the appropriate treatment of RA and the role that newer agents have in its management. Considerations regarding safety, efficacy, long-term therapy and cost will be discussed.

Plotting a Course to Manage Inflammatory Bowel Disease

Course Info:

  • Release Date: October 15, 2007
  • Expiration Date: October 15, 2008
  • Accreditation: 1.0 Total hours
  • Cost: Free

Abstract:

Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) consists of 2 very distinct entities: Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis. Both conditions have severe symptoms, including abdominal cramping, diarrhea, and rectal bleeding. Both are also associated with a multitude of complications, including an increased risk of colon cancer in patients afflicted with the disease for long periods of time. Because these conditions can affect patients who are of working age, there is a disproportionate effect of IBD on younger patients and those enrolled in the workforce. As a result, proper treatment is essential, and includes anti-inflammatory drugs, sulfasalazine, and immunomodulatory drugs. The newest class of drugs to be utilized in patients with IBD is the anti-tumor necrosis factor (anti-TNF) drug, which has been shown to be highly effective in relieving the signs and symptoms of IBD, particularly in patients with more severe disease. This program will discuss the proper management of patients with IBD, including a focus on newer therapies and their relative safety and efficacy.
